Former art history professor Allan Dean McKenzie died peacefully in Eugene from Alzheimer's disease on August 3. A memorial service will take place at 10 a.m., Saturday, August 26, at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Eugene. McKenzie taught medieval art at the UO for 25 years, specializing in Western and Byzantine art with a focus on Greek and Roman icons. “Dean was essential to the founding and growth of the [UO’s art history] department, and his influence is still felt,” stated UO Professor Jeff Hurwit. An internationally known scholar, McKenzie was often called on by collectors internationally to evaluate their art. McKenzie and his wife, Lucile, sponsored an icon room in the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art.
