The University of Oregon’s Sustainable City Year Program’s (SCYP) Redmond partnership has been recognized with a UO 2017 Sustainability Award in the Town and Gown category. The award is presented to campus individuals or groups for projects that promote, educate, or enhance a more sustainable community.

Provost Scott Coltrane has announced the names of 16 faculty members selected for the prestigious Fund for Faculty Excellence Awards. This year’s list includes Associate Professor Gerardo Sandoval of the Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management. The award provides faculty members with a $20,000 salary supplement or $30,000 for research support.
Amanda Kibbel planned to study engineering at Oregon State University or the University of Washington until, on a whim, she toured the University of Oregon.
“When I visited the Product Design Department at UO and saw what the students were creating and how it was a great blend of math, art, and sustainable design,” she said, “I knew instantly that that was what I wanted to study.”
Associate Professor Gerardo Sandoval has been confirmed by the Oregon Senate to serve on the Oregon Housing Stability Council. Sandoval was nominated for the post by Oregon Governor Kate Brown. Sandoval teaches in the Department of Planning, Public Policy, and Management (PPPM) at the University of Oregon.
Two designs by UO teams were among the Top Ten products and installations at WantedDesign 2017 in New York as selected by Dezeen. Studio Gorm—the design office of Assistant Professor Wonhee Jeong-Arndt and Associate Professor John Arndt of the UO’s Department of Product Design—won the 2017 American Design Honors earlier this year.
UO students are helping to re-envision a 19th-century Hudson’s Bay Company trading post site to incorporate current fire codes, sustainable materials, and Americans with Disabilities Act requirements—all while respecting the site’s historic character.
