Professor Roth earned his Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois (Urbana) in 1966 and his PhD in architectural history from Yale University in 1973. His primary field of research is American architecture and urban planning, especially from 1865 to 1940. More recently he has developed specialized interests in Oregon architecture and in Native American architecture.
