Media outlets are highlighting an award for a City of Springfield parking garage concept developed in part by UO architecture students.

A UO architecture professor weighed in on the National Association of Home Builders’ stance on building codes in a July 6 BloombergView feature story, “Inside the Lobby Against Tougher Homes”.

Nike’s new women’s tennis dress, “the Premier Slam,” premiered at Wimbledon recently — but not without some skeptical reactions from players assigned to wear the outfit.

The dress “is a tiny babydoll with two big slits along each side. Just try returning a 120-mile-an-hour serve in that thing,” observed Gigi Douban, reporter for “Marketplace,” broadcast live nationally on NPR stations and available online via podcast.

Exhibitions that include work by UO art faculty members open this weekend in galleries in Portland as part of Portland2016 Biennial, a major survey of work by artists who are defining and advancing contemporary art practices.

UO Associate Professor of Art Anya Kivarkis is one of five Oregon artists named Hallie Ford Fellows in the Visual Arts for 2016. She was among 156 applicants. The honor, presented by The Ford Family Foundation, comes with a $25,000 unrestricted award.

The UO’s Erdem Selek was one of just eighteen finalists among 157 entries from twenty-nine countries in the Objects category of the 2016 Belgian Biennale Interieur competition.

In early June, eleven cars from a 96-car Union Pacific oil train jumped the tracks and derailed in the Columbia River Gorge near Mosier, Oregon.

The wreck released oil onto the tracks, sparked a fire that burned through much of the night, and billowed a plume of black smoke into the sky.

Three alumni from the UO Department of Architecture and one adjunct faculty member have earned the highest professional honor granted by the prestigious American Institute of Architects (AIA). 

Amy Miller Dowell, Ron van der Veen, Jay Raskin, and William Murray were elevated to the College of Fellows in the AIA during an investiture ceremony at the organization’s national convention in Philadelphia in May.
