Preservation internships range from Croatia to New York City

Over the summer, students in the historic preservation program completed internships in both urban and rural settings as local as Salem and as remote as Croatia.

The students presented their accomplished work recently in Lawrence Hall to faculty members and first-year students looking for future internships in preservation.

Hickman exhibit provides peek at early Northwest creative culture

“Portland Creative Community 1.0,” an exhibit at the White Box in Portland, explores the early work of photographer and faculty member Craig Hickman. Hickman developed significant computer software, became a professor in the UO Department of Art Digital Arts Program, and enjoyed a career as a highly acclaimed photographer known for playful and insightful integration of word and image as well as the digital manipulation of images. The exhibit runs through November 23.

Movable art installation invites interaction between strangers, companions

Students in Assistant Professor Philip Speranza’s “Place Branding for Public Services” architecture studio have installed “Bridging,” an urban installation fabricated from 4 x 4 boards in the North Park Blocks in Portland between Davis and Everett streets. The boards slide in and out to form places to sit near a companion or places to be next to a stranger. The students intend the structure as an object to inspire “an urban intervention and evoke a conversation of the values of a city….that are based on the very compassion for one’s fellow citizen.”

Faste recognized as Sony Scholar for outstanding work

Assistant Professor Trygve Faste of the Product Design Program was honored recently with a Sony Scholar award.

The annual award recognizes outstanding junior faculty who have shown promise or demonstrated achievement in instruction, research, or both. The faculty selection committee also factors in the potential impact of the award on the faculty member's ability to further demonstrate achievement in teaching and/or research.

UO graduate finds dream job in campus sustainability

After attending the Oregon Leadership in Sustainability Program (OLIS) at the University of Oregon this past summer, one recent graduate is embarking upon what he confidently says is his ideal career.

Tristan Sewell, using the knowledge and skills he garnered from OLIS, has moved up to Walla Walla, Washington, to become the new campus sustainability coordinator at Whitman College.

UO welcomes Xian Dai architects

Professional architects from Xian Dai Architectural Design Group in China are visiting the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts this fall term for intensive study in sustainable architecture.

This marks the second year during which ten professionals from the Shanghai-based firm have come to UO for continuing education in their profession. Their visit is not only significant for furthering their careers, but the exchange program also bolsters the university’s top-ranked standing in sustainable design education.

Studio considers Chávez monument

In 1965, a young labor organizer catalyzed what soon became an international movement to unionize farm workers seeking better wages and improved working and living conditions. Over the next thirty years, he would organize thousands of workers and lead millions of consumers nationwide to boycott purchases of grapes, lettuce, and wine, eventually changing agricultural practices in America.
