One creates sustainable community spaces in Los Angeles; the other restores and repurposes existing structures in Detroit; both are graduates of the UO School of Architecture & Environment’s Department of Architecture and involved in public interest design and service-based practice.

Chaz Kern, MArch ’17, a design fellow at LA-Más, an urban design nonprofit in Los Angeles, says her firm reaches out to the community to create public spaces, alternative housing, and provide small business support.

UO historic preservation students are working with journalism students to capture and preserve oral histories from survivors of the 1948 flood that destroyed Vanport, the second largest city in Oregon during WWII. Historic Preservation Program chair and professor Jim Buckley found the opportunity a rich exchange between the programs. “Our students said ‘we don’t know how to interview’ and the J-school students said ‘we don’t know much about the neighborhood history,’ ” he says. “They learned from each other in doing the project.

Emeritus UO lecturer and longtime Eugene architect Grant Seder died June 20. Seder was partners in Unthank Seder Poticha, Architects, among other firms, and completed significant design work throughout the United States and abroad.

UO students are helping to re-envision a 19^th-century Hudson’s Bay Company trading post site to incorporate current fire codes, sustainable materials, and Americans with Disabilities Act requirements—all while respecting the site’s historic character.

When Willie Richardson moved from South Carolina to Oregon in 1978, she came with her three sisters and their families. Though the five adults and six kids traveled in cars rather than in a covered wagon, as African Americans from the South moving West to reinvent their lives, they were akin to pioneers.

Nominations are due Monday, November 14, to nominate an individual, organization, company, or agency for the 2017 George McMath Historic Preservation Award.

The University of Oregon presents the award annually for exceptional and commendable work in historic preservation, in particular for development of new ideas, approaches, and innovations. The McMath Award is intended to raise public awareness of historic preservation education and promote excellence in preservation practice.

History may be a common link among the 2018 class of UO Historic Preservation Program graduate students, but many also share an interest in public service, global travel, and literally digging into projects. They also share the distinction of being the first cohort of historic preservation students enrolled at the UO in Portland, where the program moved this fall.

A&AA welcomes these new tenure-track faculty members for the 2016–17 academic year.

Three alumni from the UO Department of Architecture and one adjunct faculty member have earned the highest professional honor granted by the prestigious American Institute of Architects (AIA). 

Amy Miller Dowell, Ron van der Veen, Jay Raskin, and William Murray were elevated to the College of Fellows in the AIA during an investiture ceremony at the organization’s national convention in Philadelphia in May.
