Larco coauthors book on multifamily site design

Associate Professor Nico Larco has coauthored Site Design for Multifamily Housing: Creating Livable, Connected Neighborhoods, published in April by Island Press.

Aimed at architects, planners, and developers, the book provides design and code guidance for walkability and connectivity in multifamily site design. Larco’s coauthors are UO graduates Kristin Kelsey, ‘MArch ’12, MIArch, ‘12, and Amanda Stocker West, MPA ‘09.

Bronet, Szenasy at White Stag May 22

A&AA Dean Frances Bronet will host a conversation with Susan S. Szenasy, longtime editor in chief and new publisher of Metropolis magazine, in Portland on May 22 as part of a series of national conversations exploring issues of design advocacy and ethics. The gathering will also celebrate the publication of Szenasy, Design Advocate, a new title by Metropolis Books. It will live tweeted at @johnhenrytweets.

Szenasy is publisher and editor in chief of Metropolis, the award-winning New York City-based magazine of architecture, design, and culture.

Laurie Olin, Ken Smith to deliver landscape architecture talks

Two distinguished landscape architects will be on campus in the coming weeks to deliver lectures as part of the Department of Landscape Architecture’s two endowed lectures series.

Laurie D. Olin will deliver the inaugural Kenneth I. Helphand Endowed Lecture on Tuesday, April 22, at the Ford Alumni Center Giustina Ballroom, 1720 E. 13th Avenue, Eugene. The 5:30 p.m. gathering is free and open to the public.

MFA thesis show May 3-25 in Portland

In Medias Res, the 2014 University of Oregon MFA Thesis Exhibition featuring work by five Department of Art master of fine arts students, will be on view May 3-25 at Disjecta Interdisciplinary Art Center, 8371 N. Interstate Avenue in Portland. The exhibition opens with a free public reception Friday, May 2, from 6-8 p.m. View the artist’s work on the Department of Art MFA exhibition site.

Michlig, Zerzan team up for Portland 2014

"Look up from your screens. The only adventure is resistance."  

That sentiment, by writer-philosopher-anarchist John Zerzan, accompanies the most recent art installation by Department of Art Assistant Professor Christopher Michlig. Michlig asked Zerzan to collaborate with him on the installation for Portland2014, a biennial exhibition that celebrates artists who are defining and advancing contemporary art practices.

Don Peting to receive 2014 McMath Award

Asked what Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School project he’s most proud of since the annual projects began twenty years ago, Associate Professor Emeritus and Field School Founding Director Don Peting defers. “That's a Sophie's Choice question,” he says. “It's like your children—you can't isolate and favor any one.”
