‘Smart Cities’ and The Portland Plan explored in lecture

January 29, 2013

Keeping cities economically prosperous, livable, healthy, and environmentally sustainable will require new approaches and innovations in all city systems.

Herman D'HoogeA lecture by Intel innovation strategist and UO in Portland instructor Herman D’Hooge on January 31 in Portland will discuss how urbanization affects a city’s infrastructure, resources, and services, and how “smart city” design can help.

D’Hooge’s lecture, “Smart and Connected: The Next Big Idea in Cities,” will also address some of the common arguments made against making cities smart. His presentation will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 31, in the Event Room of UO’s White Stag Block, 70 N.W. Couch St. in Portland. The lecture is open to the public, with seating on a first come, first served basis.

The senior principal engineer at Intel, D’Hooge will show how city systems function as a single integrated “system of systems,” and why it is important to consider the city as the unit of study. He will provide a sampling of existing and future design innovations enabled by the use of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) in the urban environment.

His presentation, in collaboration with the UO in Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts and Intel, reflects the findings from a fall 2012 seminar he taught at UO in Portland that explored how information and information technology can enable design innovations to make smarter cities. D’Hooge and his students studied the “The Portland Plan,” a 25-year strategic plan guiding the city of Portland, to develop ideas on how to implement the plan more efficiently and with smart city design innovations.

D’Hooge will also give the presentation in Eugene on Tuesday, January 29, at 6 p.m. in 177 Lawrence Hall, 1190 Franklin Boulevard. That event will be live streamed at aaa.uoregon.edu.

Members of the public may RSVP to Victoria Hiller at aaapdx@uoregon.edu or (503) 412-3718.
