Three alumni from the UO Department of Architecture and one adjunct faculty member have earned the highest professional honor granted by the prestigious American Institute of Architects (AIA). 

Amy Miller Dowell, Ron van der Veen, Jay Raskin, and William Murray were elevated to the College of Fellows in the AIA during an investiture ceremony at the organization’s national convention in Philadelphia in May.

UO architecture students could have ‘etymology’ to their lesson plan during the recent excavation for a house they are building in west Eugene.

“When we excavated for the foundation, we found a deep refuse pit containing old tires, a washing machine, and all kinds of indescribable debris,” says Associate Professor Rob Thallon. “This kind of thing might have something to do with the origin of the word ‘pitfall.’ ”

During his youth, Gunnar Hubbard, FAIA, MArch ’92, lived in central Vermont in a log cabin built by hand by his family, who spent summers constructing the home.

“We peeled every log ourselves,” says Hubbard.

The University of Oregon’s Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) will be working once again in the Willamette Valley, this time in partnership with the City of Albany.

The City and the University of Oregon are planning twenty different projects for the 2016-17 academic year ranging from economic development to parks and recreation planning. Beginning in September, students from more than ten disciplines at the UO will work closely with the Albany community over the next year.

Christoph Lindner, professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam, will join UO as the new A&AA dean beginning August 15. With a CV that includes research in globalization, sustainability, and creative practice, Lindner brings a unique roster of qualifications and perspective to lead A&AA. We caught up with him recently to ask a few questions via e-mail about how he envisions A&AA’s future.

Oregon Quarterly highlights the UO’s Sustainable Cities Year Program in Redmond in the magazine’s latest issue. The article features a video showing UO students engaging with Redmond officials and citizens on collaborative projects to help make the city greener and more livable.

Imagine building a school where all the construction materials must fit on a bicycle.  Imagine building without conventional lumber, concrete, or power tools — or, for that matter, no skilled labor, electric service, or running water. Imagine needing to explain even basic drawings to carpenters and masons unfamiliar with construction documents. Imagine having to do that decoding in French.

The Sixth Annual Undergraduate Symposium will take place Friday, May 20, in the Global Scholars Hall on the UO campus.

An exhibition of art and design work by graduating students in the University of Oregon in Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts will take place from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, during the annual Open House at the White Stag Block, 70 NW Couch Street. Student work from the Department of Architecture, the Digital Arts Program, and the Department of Product Design will be on display. The event coincides with Portland’s monthly First Thursday art walk.

Scott Coltrane, provost and senior vice president, announced today that the next dean of the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts is Christoph Lindner. He will be moving to Eugene from the Netherlands, where he is professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam.
