The Association for Computer Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) has honored UO Associate Professor Nancy Yen-wen Cheng with the 2014 ACADIA Society Award of Excellence, which was presented at the group’s annual conference in October in Los Angeles.
As we mark the 100th anniversary year of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts, each e-news will include a photograph of one of the school’s many memorable spaces through the decades since 1914. Because the buildings that have housed the school over the years have undergone many iterations—with major changes in 1923, 1958, 1971, and 1991—in this e-news we’ll begin with several photos and a bit of history.
Alessi teapots, Target clocks, Disney Dolphin Hotels, and the Washington Monument restoration—Michael Graves has influenced a generation of American design with a breadth few architects in history have matched. But it was the cream, salmon-, and blue-colored Portland Building, published on a 1982 cover of Time magazine, that first introduced Graves and the architectural movement of Postmodernism to the wider world.
The public is invited to the debut of a mobile tool shop for houseless people needing to make, repair or maintain housing, bicycles, and other personal items. The event, which will include workshops on bicycle and dwelling maintenance such as tent repair, will take place Saturday, September 13, at Opportunity Village Eugene, 111 N. Garfield St. at 1 p.m.
The mobile tool shop was designed and built by The Common Good—initially comprised of designBridge students from the University of Oregon Department of Architecture but now including members of Opportunity Village Eugene.
The first student-built house in the OregonBILDS (Building Integrated Livable Designs Sustainably) project is on the Home Builder’s Association of Lane County’s 2014 Tour of Homes through July 27. The house was featured in a Register-Guard story about the tour and is open weeknights from 6-9 p.m. and weekends from noon to 6 p.m.
“Marking the Forest,” a ten-day summer workshop offered by the Architectural Association (AA) School of Architecture in London, England, returns to Oregon for a third year this summer. The application deadline is July 31 for the August 14-24 course.
The AA Visiting School, as it is officially termed, is open to architecture and design students and professionals worldwide.
Lucas Gray, who co-founded the start-up firm Propel Studio Architecture in Portland, has traveled the world learning first-hand about design and sustainability. His formal education culminated with a MArch from UO, where, to save time when working on deadline, he pitched a tent outside the fourth-floor balcony of Lawrence Hall to sleep at night.

Several of the University of Oregon’s campus buildings have questionable environments with regard to thermal comfort and indoor air quality, and students of A&AA may be able to remedy this.
The recent Undergraduate Research Symposium, which featured research from A&AA students, tackled a number of serious matters for sustainable design including heat retention (and loss) at the John E. Jaqua Center, ventilation effectiveness at Deady Hall, and the best way to soundproof the campus residence halls.
Associate Professor Mark L. Gillem, PhD, FAIA, AICP, recently received a national-level design award for the Installation Development Plan at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida from the American Planning Association's Federal Planning Division. Through his firm, The Urban Collaborative, he helped the installation and the prime contractor (Atkins) prepare a plan that accommodates growth while leveraging principles of sustainable urbanism to preserve sensitive habitats and landscapes.
UO architecture graduate student Grace Aaraj was the People’s Choice winner in the Three Minute Thesis State Championships in May, where doctoral and master’s students were challenged to present their thesis topic in three minutes using one slide. A native of Lebanon, Aaraj is attending the UO on a Fulbright scholarship after graduating with a BArch from the Institut des Beaux Arts II, Beirut.
