Students in Assistant Professor Philip Speranza’s “Place Branding for Public Services” architecture studio have installed “Bridging,” an urban installation fabricated from 4 x 4 boards in the North Park Blocks in Portland between Davis and Everett streets. The boards slide in and out to form places to sit near a companion or places to be next to a stranger. The students intend the structure as an object to inspire “an urban intervention and evoke a conversation of the values of a city….that are based on the very compassion for one’s fellow citizen.”

Professional architects from Xian Dai Architectural Design Group in China are visiting the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts this fall term for intensive study in sustainable architecture.

This marks the second year during which ten professionals from the Shanghai-based firm have come to UO for continuing education in their profession. Their visit is not only significant for furthering their careers, but the exchange program also bolsters the university’s top-ranked standing in sustainable design education.

The University of Oregon has hired Portland writer, editor, and organizer Randy Gragg to lead the John Yeon Center. Gragg is best known as a writer on art, architecture, and urban issues for The Oregonian, from 1989 to 2007, and for his role as editor in chief of Portland Monthly, where he will continue as editor at large. The John Yeon Center is an educational and research program of the UO School of Architecture and Allied Arts.

Applications will be accepted through Friday, November 15, to nominate an individual for the George McMath Historic Preservation Award, given annually by the University of Oregon.

AIA Regional Student Awards:

Congratulations are in order for MArch students Robert Larson, Matthew Philbrook, and Amanda Wesely, whose project “Layers of Growth” has been selected by the AIA Northwest & Pacific Regional Student Design Awards jury for a 2013 Merit Award.

Honorable Mention has been awarded to project “[Re] Active and Eco-Resort,” in the 2013 Fabric in Architecture competition sponsored by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture. This project was designed by MArch students Lee Eckert, Amy Fisher, Erik Herman and Anna Kindt in ARCH 584 intermediate design studio under the direction of Assistant Professor Mark Donofrio.

From flip books to comic strips to YouTube videos, students in a recent 2013 architecture class got creative in fulfilling an atypical class assignment: interpret the life cycle of concrete at the molecular scale.

Molecules? In an architecture class? Indeed; it’s advanced architectural technology, and seventeen students jumped at the chance to explore this less-than-common aspect of sustainable design in an interdisciplinary setting.

The University of Oregon keeps coming up tops in national surveys of the flagship colleges in the United States. This summer, two national rankings included UO in the best of the best: the Fiske Guide to Colleges and U.S. News and World Report’s annual Best Colleges ranking.

Associate Professor Ihab Elzeyadi’s Green Classroom Toolbox was featured on internationally broadcast PRX (Public Radio Exchange) in an Isla Earth Radio Series program recently.
