Casey Howard had no hint when she enrolled as a landscape architecture major that she’d wind up on a student team that would defeat professional firm entries in a national competition. Or that the contest would lead her to form a business, learn about patents, and build prototypes. Or that the project would inspire a career goal—to create a cost-effective way to safeguard water quality in developing countries.
The Sixth Annual Undergraduate Symposium will take place Friday, May 20, in the Global Scholars Hall on the UO campus.

Core77 is currently featuring not one but two stories about designs that two UO Product Design Program professors are showing during New York Design Week, starting Friday, May 13, in the exhibition Furnishing Utopia. Both stories feature Studio Gorm, the design firm of Associate Professor John Arndt and Assistant Professor Wonhee Arndt.
Work by nearly 100 graduating senior art, digital arts, and product design students will be exhibited in Spring Storm 2016 Senior Show on Friday, May 27, from 5-8 p.m. over two floors in Lawrence Hall, 1190 Franklin Boulevard, on the UO campus. A reception for the artists will take place from 5-8 p.m. during the exhibition, which is free and open to the public.
The State of Oregon’s Higher Education Coordinating Commission gave its final program approval May 12 to launch the new master of science degree in sports product design offered by the UO’s Product Design Program.
An exhibition of art and design work by graduating students in the University of Oregon in Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts will take place from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, during the annual Open House at the White Stag Block, 70 NW Couch Street. Student work from the Department of Architecture, the Digital Arts Program, and the Department of Product Design will be on display. The event coincides with Portland’s monthly First Thursday art walk.
Joyce Braden Harris, Danielle Arigoni, and Courtney Griesel are the winners of the 2016 awards for public service conferred annually by the UO Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management and the department’s advisory council. The awards ceremony will take place Thursday, May 19, in the Ford Alumni Center Guistina Ballroom on the University of Oregon campus, 1720 E. 13th Avenue, Eugene.
Scott Coltrane, provost and senior vice president, announced today that the next dean of the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts is Christoph Lindner. He will be moving to Eugene from the Netherlands, where he is professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam.
Product Design Program Professor Susan L. Sokolowski will be the keynote speaker April 29 at the “2016 Symposium: Fashion And the Body” presented by the University of Minnesota College of Design in St. Paul.
Sokolowski, who is helping establish the new UO Portland sports product design masters program set to launch September 2017, will give a talk titled “Fashioning the Athletic Body.”
