Landscape Architecture

Associate Professor Mark L. Gillem, PhD, FAIA, AICP, recently received a national-level design award for the Installation Development Plan at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida from the American Planning Association's Federal Planning Division. Through his firm, The Urban Collaborative, he helped the installation and the prime contractor (Atkins) prepare a plan that accommodates growth while leveraging principles of sustainable urbanism to preserve sensitive habitats and landscapes.

A team of UO landscape architects has won second place in an international competition to raise awareness of the true flood risk to people living in landscapes where the vulnerability may not be obvious.

Professor Kenneth Helphand, Associate Professor Liska Chan, and graduate students Shannon Arms, Emilie Froh, Carol Stafford, and Pieter Van Remoortere won second place in The “Watermarks” competition for their entry, “PDX Marks.”

Two Eugene-area television stations broadcast stories recently about the first house built by UO and LCC students in an unusual partnership with two Lane County agencies. The students, in an architecture studio called OregonBILDS, are wrapping up construction on the three-bedroom, two-bath home that will be sold to a local family.

The National Science Foundation’s Macrosystems Biology Program has awarded $3.8 million to a five-year project including research by Associate Professor Bart Johnson of the Department of Landscape Architecture.

The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) has awarded Associate Professor Bart Johnson the 2014 Excellence in Research Award, Senior level. Johnson formally accepted the award at the annual CELA conference in Baltimore, Maryland, in March.

Two distinguished landscape architects will be on campus in the coming weeks to deliver lectures as part of the Department of Landscape Architecture’s two endowed lectures series.

Laurie D. Olin will deliver the inaugural Kenneth I. Helphand Endowed Lecture on Tuesday, April 22, at the Ford Alumni Center Giustina Ballroom, 1720 E. 13th Avenue, Eugene. The 5:30 p.m. gathering is free and open to the public.

Experimentation in teaching is not new in the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.  From the noncompetitive, nongraded studio courses in architecture initiated at the school’s founding to experiments with new media and motion graphics leading to national leadership in digital arts, to pioneering public policy efforts such as Oregon’s land use law, A&AA is a rich environment for trying out new ideas. Enterprising faculty members and students who shared a spirit of collaboration and experimentation and who were not adverse to risk-taking founded the school in 1914. 

Associate professor of architecture Mark L. Gillem can now add FAIA to his credentials. Gillem, PhD, AICP, and principal at The Urban Collaborative, is among 139 AIA members recently elevated to the prestigious College of Fellows by the 2014 Jury of Fellows from the American Institute of Architects (AIA).

Ecology and the Architectural Imagination, a new book by Brook Muller, A&AA associate dean and associate professor of architecture, examines how to integrate architecture with complex ecological systems and speculates on future intersections of these domains.

Professor Rob Ribe of the Department of Landscape Architecture has been selected for a 2013 Oregon ASLA (American Society of Landscape Architects) research and communication honor award for his rigorous, peer-reviewed studies assessing how to design for and improve the scenic quality of harvests in Pacific Northwest federal forests.
