In 1965, a young labor organizer catalyzed what soon became an international movement to unionize farm workers seeking better wages and improved working and living conditions. Over the next thirty years, he would organize thousands of workers and lead millions of consumers nationwide to boycott purchases of grapes, lettuce, and wine, eventually changing agricultural practices in America.
The University of Oregon keeps coming up tops in national surveys of the flagship colleges in the United States. This summer, two national rankings included UO in the best of the best: the Fiske Guide to Colleges and U.S. News and World Report’s annual Best Colleges ranking.
University of Oregon Professor Robert Ribe joined the faculty of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich as guest professor during spring term, collaborating with faculty, students, and researchers in the Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems Institute.

The Sustainable Cities Initiative was featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education on May 20. The story shares the UO’s innovative community engagement model with the nation's higher education community. SCI is a cross-disciplinary program at UO involving architecture, landscape architecture, planning, product design, art, law, journalism and business. While the Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) pioneered in Oregon, SCI has been training other universities interested in adopting the model and implementing a version of it in their local communities.
Deni Ruggeri, UO assistant professor of landscape architecture, has been invited to speak at the final conference “New Medina: from Pilot Towns to Sustainable Cities” in Morocco from June 9-13. The consortium is the culmination of a multiyear project that assembles experts and stakeholders to share planning strategies for the creation of sustainable “new towns” in Morocco, Algeria, and Egypt.
“Landscape Thinking,” a special symposium honoring University of Oregon landscape architecture Professor Emeritus Kenneth Helphand on his retirement from forty years of teaching, will be held Saturday, May 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the UO Ford Alumni Center, 1720 E. 13th Avenue, Eugene. The event will help fund an endowment for a lecture series named in honor of Helphand. The deadline to reserve tickets is May 15.
A small garden plot in the corner of the Edison Elementary School playground marks the beginning of a collaborative relationship between the UO Service Learning Program and Edison’s K-5 students. The Schoolhouse Garden project will provide students hands-on opportunities to think critically about their natural surroundings, from measuring plant growth to selling the produce back to the school cafeteria.
Five student teams from the University of Oregon competed in the 2013 Urban Land Institute’s (ULI) Gerald D. Hines Student Urban Design Competition, which attracted 149 team entries from 70 universities in the United States and Canada. The competition seeks to transform cities through sustainable urban design.
Applications to the University of Oregon’s 2013 Croatia Conservation Field School are being accepted through March 1 for the program on Croatia's central Dalmatian Coast June 21-July 19. Registration priority will be give to students in historic preservation, architecture, landscape architecture, and other A&AA majors and programs.
