Erin Moore, AIA, Associate Professor of Architecture and Environmental Studies and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Architecture has been named the new Head of the School of Architecture & Environment, Dean Christoph Lindner announced on Tuesday.
Growing up on a 14-acre ranch outside rural Woodburn, Oregon, gave Alexis Griffin (BLA ’18) a hands-on head start toward becoming a landscape architect.
Associate Professor Liska Chan has accepted a three-year appointment as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs effective August 1, Dean Christoph Lindner announced April 26.
Chan has taught at the University of Oregon since 2001 and served as Head of the Department of Landscape Architecture from 2010 to 2015. She is currently the Head of the School of Architecture & Environment.
“I am delighted that Liska has accepted the role of Associate Dean, and I look forward to her continued contributions as a critical member of the College of Design leadership team,” Lindner said.
A grant from the Presidential Fund for Excellence will allow Urbanism Next to establish a new center with faculty and staff from the College of Design's Portland and Eugene campuses. The center will expand on the work Urbanism Next is doing to examine the changes that could come with the growth of such technologies as autonomous vehicles, ecommerce and the sharing economy.

Department of Landscape Architecture Professor Bart Johnson is leading the steering committee for the new Association of Pacific Rim Universities Sustainable Cities and Landscapes Hub (APRU SCL), which UO has been selected to host. The Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability (HOPES) conference, an annual gathering hosted each spring term by the University of Oregon’s School of Architecture and Allied Arts, is one of the only student-run sustainability conferences in the United States.

Efforts by UO researchers to study how climate change may change Pacific Northwest grasslands have blossomed into global collaborations with two recently published reports and a third on the way. Department of Landscape Architecture Professor Bart Johnson is one of the UO researchers collaborating in the effort. The three studies focus on the ability of soils to store excess carbon in the face of warming conditions. Studies at individual research sites have produced mixed results, but the new findings may help to change the scientific understanding.
