The Sustainable Cities Initiative (SCI) will hold a three-day conference April 12-14 for university representatives, city officials, and organizational partners who are interested in adopting and adapting the Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) model to their home institutions and community contexts.

Assistant Professor Gerardo Sandoval and graduate student Lok Yee Au have been honored with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards, presented by the University of Oregon. Sandoval was recognized for his work as a faculty member in the Department of Planning, Public Policy and Management, while Au won for her essay written for a class taught by Sandoval.

The University of Oregon’s Sustainable City Year Program (SCYP) is among six winners selected from global applicants for the 2015 Ashoka U-Cordes Innovation Award, which recognizes top educational approaches in social entrepreneurship within higher education.

Professor Marc Schlossberg has been awarded a rare second Fulbright Scholarship, this time to work with faculty at Technion–Israel Institute of Technology, where he will collaborate with colleagues in the institute’s Department of Architecture and Town Planning.

Associate Professor Renee Irvin, director of the Master of Nonprofit Management Program at UO, was invited recently by the White House to gather with the nation’s top 100 civic participation leaders to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the community foundation. 

Oregon Sea Grant has selected Sarah Allison as the recipient of the 2014-2016 Resilience and Adaptation Graduate Fellowship. The $16,000 award will support research for her final project, “Keeping Local Economies Safe: the Role of Economic Development Plans in Natural Hazards Resilience.” 

Three School of Architecture and Allied Arts faculty members were among the thirteen recipients of the 2014-15 school year Fund for Faculty Excellence Award.

Professors Anya Kivarkis and Laura Vandenburgh of the Department of Art, and Rich Margerum, professor and department head for the Department of Planning, and Public Management, were selected due to their influence on University of Oregon academics within their respective fields.

A peer-reviewed journal article by Assistant Professor Gerardo Sandoval has won the Chester Rapkin Award For Best Paper in the 2013 Journal of Planning Education and Research. The prize was awarded for Sandoval’s article "Shadow Transnationalism: Cross-Border Networks and Planning Challenges of Transnational Unauthorized Immigrant Communities" (Vol. 33 (1), pp. 176-193).
