Two Product Design Program bachelor of fine art candidates were honored recently for their work by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), earning invitations to the Western District Conference April 10-11 in San Jose, California.
Architecture students Roxanne Robles, Gilberto Villalobos, and Omar Hason, landscape architecture student Andrew Jepson-Sullivan, and PPPM students Nestor Guevara and Evelyn Perdomo received an honorable mention in the 2015 Hines/Urban Land Institute design competition for their project titled "Urban Groves."
The jury recognized the UO submission for “the diagrammatic visualization, a good optimization of real estate in plan, as well as the outlined cross section, and general presentation board design.”
Department of Architecture Professor Hajo Neis, director of the Department of Architecture at UO in Portland and director of the Portland Urban Architecture Research Laboratory (PUARL), has announced a collaboration between PUARL and Pursuit of Pattern Languages and Societal Change (PURPLSOC) to present the international 2015 conference on pattern language, at Danube University in Austria in July.
The art and design village across from Franklin Boulevard has been the home to many programs of the School of Architecture and Allied Arts since the 1960s and is still an active hub for creative practice. Seven media areas for the Department of Art have studios, faculty offices, and graduate student workspaces on the Northsite. These media areas are sculpture, ceramics, painting, photography, digital arts, fibers, and metals and jewelry.
At the time of the Iranian revolution, Taraneh Hemami was a Tehran-born college freshman who had moved to the United States after graduating high school. She studied art at the University of Oregon. She focused on studio work and wasn’t interested in politics.
The annual Holistic Options for Planet Earth Sustainability (HOPES) conference sponsored by the Ecological Design Center will be held on the UO campus April 9-11. This is the 21st year of the student-run conference, an opportunity for students, visiting scholars, and faculty and community members to discuss the relationship between ecology and design and how this connection can produce sustainable buildings.
The Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture (CELA) has awarded Associate Professor Roxi Thoren the 2015 Excellence in Teaching Award–Senior Faculty. CELA confers this award to recognize excellence in creative, innovative, and effective teaching methodologies and practice to enhance excellence in teaching.
The A&AA community continues to take steps toward creating its future home on University Street. The location of the Phase I A&AA building is on the site of the current McArthur Court. Gail Dubrow is the 2015 recipient of the Ellis F. Lawrence Medal, the highest alumni honor presented by the School of Architecture and Allied Arts.
Twenty-three firms looking to hire A&AA graduates participated in the three-day 2015 Recruitment Fair sponsored by the Office of Professional Outreach and Development for Students (PODS) in Lawrence Hall recently. Recruiters lined up along two floors in the halls of Lawrence, meeting students where they live and learn.
