An exhibition of art and design work by graduating students in the University of Oregon in Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts will take place from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, during the annual Open House at the White Stag Block, 70 NW Couch Street. Student work from the Department of Architecture, the Digital Arts Program, and the Department of Product Design will be on display. The event coincides with Portland’s monthly First Thursday art walk.

Scott Coltrane, provost and senior vice president, announced today that the next dean of the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts is Christoph Lindner. He will be moving to Eugene from the Netherlands, where he is professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam.

Product Design Program Professor Susan L. Sokolowski will be the keynote speaker April 29 at the “2016 Symposium: Fashion And the Body” presented by the University of Minnesota College of Design in St. Paul.

Sokolowski, who is helping establish the new UO Portland sports product design masters program set to launch September 2017, will give a talk titled “Fashioning the Athletic Body.”

A Portland building with zero net energy consumption and water waste along with a neighborhood restoration project in North Minneapolis are the two University of Oregon student designs selected in a national competition led by the American Institute of Architects’ Committee on the Environment (AIA COTE) and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.

UO architecture students, in a recent design symposium with Portland Public Schools, captured new ideas in school design from speakers internationally renowned for their expertise in innovative school design.

Portland is beginning an eight-year program to upgrade its school infrastructure following a voter-approved building improvement bond.

Students in the fifth year BFA program of the Portland Digital Arts Program showcased their work during the winter term 2016 final reviews.  Students learn to discuss their work and their practice and to gain and accept feedback from their peers and the arts community. Final reviews are an opportunity to connect with the professional community and to converse about their work before the students complete their projects and install their final work in the year-end exhibition at the UO White Box in June.

Although many architecture graduates might agonize over whether they’ll be able to land a secure job at a firm, Miguel McKelvey found an alternative way to convert his architecture degree into entrepreneurial success.

After Alexis Biddle finished his first year of law school he wasn’t sure he wanted to be a lawyer, so he decided to take time off to find direction. He accomplished that literally by working as a taxi driver.

The 2016 UO Art MFA Thesis Exhibition opens Friday, May 6, at Disjecta Contemporary Art Center, 8371 North Interstate Avenue in Portland, with a reception from 6-9 p.m. The exhibition runs through May 29.

Students in the adaptive design studio had a specific vision and goal: to enable the USA wheelchair rugby team to compete at its highest potential using innovative products designed just for them.

Refining and redesigning athletic wear for adaptive athletes is becoming a noted specialty at the UO in Portland thanks to the unique curriculum launched four years ago in the Product Design Program. The studio—Adaptive Products: Enabling Athletes with Disabilities—was first offered to fifth-year bachelor of fine arts product design students in winter 2012.
