Nike’s new tennis dress a lesson in design dos, don’ts

Nike’s new women’s tennis dress, “the Premier Slam,” premiered at Wimbledon recently — but not without some skeptical reactions from players assigned to wear the outfit.

The dress “is a tiny babydoll with two big slits along each side. Just try returning a 120-mile-an-hour serve in that thing,” observed Gigi Douban, reporter for “Marketplace,” broadcast live nationally on NPR stations and available online via podcast.

Christoph Lindner shares his views on research, international study, and teaching

Christoph Lindner, professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam, will join UO as the new A&AA dean beginning August 15. With a CV that includes research in globalization, sustainability, and creative practice, Lindner brings a unique roster of qualifications and perspective to lead A&AA. We caught up with him recently to ask a few questions via e-mail about how he envisions A&AA’s future.

UO Product Design Program celebrates ribbon-cutting at 942 Olive Street, a new innovation hub in downtown Eugene

Known as as 942 Olive Street, the UO’s new downtown innovation hub will house Product Design Program maker spaces including a design studio, a computer-assisted design lab, and a polymer lab. The hub is also home to the Regional Accelerator and Innovation Network (RAIN) and the Tyler Invention Greenhouse, which aims to leverage UO expertise in green chemistry and connect entrepreneurs and product designers. UO President Michael Schill and Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy cut the ribbon on the hub recently.

New York Design Week features work by UO product design professors

Core77 is currently featuring not one but two stories about designs that two UO Product Design Program professors are showing during New York Design Week, starting Friday, May 13, in the exhibition Furnishing Utopia. Both stories feature Studio Gorm, the design firm of Associate Professor John Arndt and Assistant Professor Wonhee Arndt.

‘Spring Storm’ returns to Lawrence Hall

Work by nearly 100 graduating senior art, digital arts, and product design students will be exhibited in Spring Storm 2016 Senior Show on Friday, May 27, from 5-8 p.m. over two floors in Lawrence Hall, 1190 Franklin Boulevard, on the UO campus. A reception for the artists will take place from 5-8 p.m. during the exhibition, which is free and open to the public.

UO in Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts announces June 2 Open House for art, design, architecture

An exhibition of art and design work by graduating students in the University of Oregon in Portland School of Architecture and Allied Arts will take place from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, June 2, during the annual Open House at the White Stag Block, 70 NW Couch Street. Student work from the Department of Architecture, the Digital Arts Program, and the Department of Product Design will be on display. The event coincides with Portland’s monthly First Thursday art walk.

New Dean Selected for the School of Architecture and Allied Arts

Christoph LindnerScott Coltrane, provost and senior vice president, announced today that the next dean of the University of Oregon School of Architecture and Allied Arts is Christoph Lindner. He will be moving to Eugene from the Netherlands, where he is professor of media and culture at the University of Amsterdam.
